MANAJEMEN hubungan masyarakat merupakan fungsi utama yang diperlukan oleh suatu lembaga, terutama lembaga pendidikan. Sebab, pada dasarnya, sekolahan dari masyarakat untuk masyarakat. Oleh karena itu, pimpinan lembaga pendidikan harus bisa terus-menerus membina hubungan yang baik antara lembaga pendidikan atau sekolahan dengan masyarakat.
Fungsi dari hubungan ini bertujuan untuk menciptakan dan mengembangkan persepsi terbaik bagi suatu lembaga pendidikan, yang kegiatannya langsung maupun tidak langsung bagi keberlangsungan masa depan suatu lembaga pendidikan terkait program-program yang ada. Harapannya agar masyarakat bersimpati terhadap program-program lembaga pendidikan ataupun sekolahan yang dapat mengundang partisipasi yang aktif di lingkungan masyarakat.
Beberapa manfaat ketika hubungan ini terjalin secara bagus, maka yang terjadi adalah bahwa pihak lembaga selalu mendapat masukan yang sangat bagus, seperti halnya bantuan dalam pemikiran, dana, sarana, dan lain-lain. Oleh karena itu, lembaga pendidikan perlu memanfaatkan dan melibatkan hubungan masyarakat dalam pengelolaannya.
Terkait segala informasi tentang perkembangan kemajuan sekolah, bahkan permasalahan belajar siswa selalu akan muncul dan berkembang setiap saat. Karena itu, maka diperlukan penjelasan informasi yang terus-menerus dari lembaga sekolahan untuk masyarakat atau orang tua murid, sehingga mereka sadar akan pentingnya keikutsertaan dalam meningkatkan mutu pendidikan putra-putrinya.
Dengan demikian, untuk menjembatani kepentingan kedua pihak, diperlukan satu bidang khusus yang membidangi aktivitas hubungan masyarakat dengan suatu lembaga, agar dikelola dengan baik, profesional, efektif, dan efisien demi tercapainya satu kesatuan yang tidak dapat terpisahkan.***
